6.0 MAGNITUDE TREMORS STRICKEN OFF THE ODISHA COAST
The government said the quake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.
Dr. L.S.Rathore, director general of meteorelogy informed that Wednesday night at 9:52 PM earthquake's epicentre is situated 60 Kms far from Paradip (Odisha) in Bay of Bengal upto 10 Kms deep in the water.
"The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.0 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in the Bay of Bengal," said an official of the meteorological unit.
According to the Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, the magnitude of the quake was 5.8.
Due to the quake, mild tremors were experienced in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre.
People came out of their home to rescue themselves.
People in many Odisha cities including Cuttack and Bhubaneswar ran out of their houses and took shelter on the streets. The tremor was felt for five-10 seconds.
Odisha special relief commissioner PK Mohapatra said no reports of any damage to property and casualty had been received so far. "There is no reason to fear."
In Chennai, people came out of their homes in areas like Adyar, Porur, Kodambakkam, Triplicane, T Nagar and Nungambakkam.
In Kolkata too, people came out on the streets in panic. There was, however, no news of casualties or damage.
The tremors were felt around 9.53 pm across the metropolis and south Bengal districts such as East Midnapore, Bankura, Hooghly, Burdwan, Murshidabad, Howrah, West Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts.
