JUSTICE G.ROHINI TAKEN OATH AS CHIEF JUSTICE OF DELHI HIGH COURT ON 21ST APRIL 2014
Justice Rohini (58) was earlier a judge at Andhra Pradesh high court. She succeeds Justice N V Ramana who was elevated to the Supreme Court in February. Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed has been the acting chief justice at Delhi HC since then.
LG Najeeb Jung administered the oath of office to Justice Rohini. "This symbolizes women's empowerment and, of course, we need many more role models like her who can inspire young girls across the country to aspire for top positions in all walks of life," Jung said.
Justice Rohini is the 10th woman judge of the 40 judges in Delhi high court and is expected to preside for a period of four years. Born in 1955, she studied at the Osmania University in Hyderabad and then at the College of Law, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.
In 2010-11, during the height of the Telangana agitation when state-owned buses remained off the roads, a state civil services aspirant from Medak district petitioned Justice Rohini pointing out the logistical difficulties in reaching his examination centre and requesting her intervention. She, in turn, asked how the petitioner managed to come to the state capital for the hearing, and dismissed the case.
She enrolled as an advocate in December 1980 and later became chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Bar Council. She was appointed a government pleader in the high court in 1995. She was appointed additional judge in 2001 and made a permanent judge in 2002.
